Selection Criteria Basics

Throughout August 2006 our organisation did a survey regarding Australian governing administration recruiting movements along with a primary focus on selection criteria. The outcomes from the government hiring survey showed alarming statistics, and highlighted that a great number of applicants for government positions have no idea what’s expected when making an application for a government job.

The key points in the survey found that only 10% of applicants are chosen for an interview. 31% of applicants were not chosen for an interview because they did not submit a correct application.

So, let’s get back to fundamentals. What’s required if you present an application for an Australian government job? In short, you will require:

An job application form (unless the division you’re applying to doesn’t have an application form). A introduction letter. A cv. Statements addressing the selection criteria Anything else expected by the department or bureau that is per the selection documents (eg copies of qualifications, referees and so on).

In our study, the place that a majority of people appeared to struggle with, was writing appropriate responses to the key selection criteria.

When producing assertions against selection criteria in your written job application your primary goal would be to illustrate your capabilities against the key selection criteria by providing proof that you fulfill the selection criteria. This evidence will need to include specific particulars that may be verified by referees if necessary. As a common guide, claims should be between half and a full-page per criterion (criterion is singular, criteria is plural).

The main element to effective claims against selection criteria is delivering solid information. Assertions should:

be direct, integrate samples, and not consist of broad sweeping claims.

Perform the sums; if 10% of job seekers got an employment interview, and 31% were eliminated due to the fact of not handling criteria appropriately, this means that the remaining 59% did handle the selection criteria, but they didn’t do a good enough job of it to get an interview.

Given the time it usually takes to arrange an application, it’s worthwhile putting in the time and energy as an expense so that you can secure your position among the 10%.

What you will find here is advice on addressing selection criteria, selection criteria examples, application templates, interview advice, ebooks and services that will make your next application a breeze. Addressing selection criteria has just been made easier.
